Backbone of the Nation looks at the miners’ strike of 1984-85 and its impact on the communities affected. This was an era-defining moment in British history and its legacy is still felt today. Based on interviews with those involved in the strike, the book shows how miners and their wives organised to protect themselves and records the triumphs, losses and resilience of their communities.

Robert Gildea is Professor Emeritus of Modern History at Oxford University. He spoke at StonyWords in 2016 about his book Fighters in the Shadows.
